Morphology / Appearance

Prunus cerasifera Ehrh.

Character recognition:

Plant: small trees reaching 6-9 m in height;
Root: rhizomatous;
Stem: with thorny branches, young shoots glabra, shiny;
Leaves: are ovate and glossy dark green; shiny on top and ubescente the ribs on the underside.
Flowers: hermaphrodite; blooms before leaves emerge; the 5-petalled flowers are about 2cm across and are borne on the bare shoots in great profusion from mid-February. 
Fruits: drupe, 2-3 cm in diameter, and yellow or red in colour.
